Intro to Interoperability: Metaverse for Education Newsletter Issue #21

Hello Educators & Friends!

What a month November was for the web3 world! If you’ve been following the news, FTX’s corruption, Meta’s layoffs, BlockFi’s bankruptcy, and even Stable Diffusion 2.0 are fragmenting web3 sentiment. Funny thing is, none of these headlines have to do with web3. Similar things have happened before & when web3 companies are truly decentralized, they may never happen again. If you wade through the scams, you’ll find the right projects to invest your time in. In fact, we just concluded our first Ed3Con & it was absolute magic.

So let’s get to what matters. Real value in web3.

➡Interoperability is the ability for systems to work together as part of a larger ecosystem, rather than entities operating in isolation. If AI, metaverse, blockchain, credentials, etc. are able to create seamless integrations with one another, they will be 100x more powerful.

In it’s simplest form, users should be able to leverage the power of one parcel of information while consuming another. For example, when you go to school, your personal information, course grades, learning management system, and transcript should be interoperable, even with several different providers.

What could that look like in an interoperable web3 world? Imagine if…

• 👛You purchase a course with a university coin that you earned by tutoring a peer

• 😊AI personalizes your course based on your preferences

• 🌇Part of the course is hosted in a metaverse space where you’re learning with 50 students from 10 different countries

• 🏅Competencies from that course attach to a verified credential as metadata on blockchain & are recognized by 50 other institutions

• 👍🏽The credential lives in your personal wallet & is easily shared on your decentralized social media app

• 💼You’ve made your learner wallet public so employers get a ping with your metadata & can poach you for an internship

Interoperability relies on technical (like formats & protocols), content (like metadata), & organizational (like authentication) agreements, so this vision I’ve painted is still a bit of a dream. Organizations would actually have to collaborate & adhere to transparent, democratically agreed upon standards. But it’s not a far off dream, because it’s not a new conversation.
