We didn't realize how perfectly timed this #AI course with @FordhamNYC would be... NYC just banned the use of #chatGPT on school devices. We are empowering students with skills & mindsets to use tech effectively. Thank you for being a futurist, Fordham!

Dear Educators & Friends,

Happy New Year! I hope this year is kicking off strong for you. If you’re an educator, you’re probably getting ready for the second half of a bonkers school year. If your students aren’t already using AI to generate their essays, they might be using Tiktok as their main search engine. With so much tech so easily available, how do we uphold developmentally appropriate and substantive learning experiences?

New York City Education Department has come up with a solution, to block ChatGPT on school devices.

This reminds me of when I began using Google in high school. My teachers mandated research trips to the library as a skill I would use forever. Of course, I used Google anyway.

This also reminds me of when schools banned social media and Sex-Education in schools. The result? Students did more of both.

Unless you want to recreate The Village, we cannot ignore human advancements. Instead of hiding our students from it, perhaps the best solution is to guide students in taking advantage of tech for good and not becoming victim to it.

This month’s issue is a deeper dive into AI in education (following our intro to AI issue). You’ll see explicit examples for using AI, user guides, and a list of tools.

We believe so vehemently that tech should be taught to students that at the wake of NYC’s ban, our non-profit Ed3 DAO is partnering with Fordham University to launch a virtual AI course for high school students during Winter Break. We hope to help students understand when, why, and how AI can be used, and what ethical considerations they should make including analyzing bias, weighing copyright & ownership infringement, the environmental costs of AI engines, accountability for use of AI, and malicious intent. If you know a High School student who might benefit from this program, check out this link.

As for our own learning, this newsletter issue is yours to consume.

Warmly yours,

Vriti Saraf
